A critical examination of the theme of blood-sports – lust for (and disgust for) the kill, pity for the victims, tally-ho, culture and nature. The shade is richly decorated with drawings and script. When the lamp is switched off, the joys of hunting are portrayed; but when the lamp is switched on, images of the bitter cruelty and inhumanity of blood-sports shine through the parchment. This imposing lamp carries an atmosphere of the surreal – beneath the pompous tassels hang, as on a carousel, the ghosts of the dead animals presented as shooting-targets.
